Seven Churches The Big Picture

Revelation! What does it mean and why would I read it?

What does Revelation really mean and why would anyone want to read such a seemingly confusing book, let alone the whole Bible. Have you ever thought any of these thoughts?

You’re not alone. Many grown-up Christians haven’t read the entire book of Revelation because it seems too difficult or scary. So let’s explore these two important questions.

What does the word REVELATION really mean?

The dictionary says revelation is the act of revealing or disclosing something, especially something you didn’t realize before. Revelation begins with these words, “The revelation of Jesus Christ”. So the book of Revelation is just revealing who Jesus is more fully.

Do you want to know Jesus better? Do you want to know more about who He is? Then the book of Revelation is a great place to find out!

Why would anyone want to read the book of Revelation?

Well let me ask you this. Do you want to be happy? And not just kind-of happy – how would you like to have a deep inner joy that no one could take away? Sounds great doesn’t it!

Well, that is exactly the promise to those who read Revelation and take what they read seriously. In other words, read and follow the counsel given.

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” Revelation 1:3

“Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.” Revelation 22:7

The word “blessed” comes from the greek word “makarios” which means a deep inner joy.

Revelation begins and ends with a promise of blessing and joy for you when you read and hear the words written there and take them to heart.

Here’s another clue that reading Revelation will be a blessing.

In the Bible, the number seven often means completeness or perfection. Guess how many blessings are mentioned in the book of Revelation? That’s right – seven! Well talk about them more another time. But if you want to see them for yourself you can read them here.
